It's been more than a year since my last post and I doubt anyone even reads this little blog anymore, but I like keeping it if only for my own reference - it's handy to be able to scroll back and remind myself of some good recipes when I start to get bored... and to those of you who may still be around - hello again!!!<br /><br />Anyways, I read <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Sexy-Diet-Veggies-Ignite/dp/1599218011/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298258249&sr=8-1">Crazy Sexy Diet</a> recently and it got me all excited about juicing. In the past I've stuck with smoothies, and I still like smoothies for the fact that all of the good fiber is incorporated into your drink, but variety is good, and green juices have a lot going for them as well. I got a used Champion juicer a few weeks ago on Craigslist and ever since, I've been making juice nearly every day.<br /><br />I forgot to take a picture of the finished product, but here's a shot of a big 'salad-in-a-glass' juice I made tonight - it contained an entire bunch of spinach (leaves only), one cucumber, two celery stalks, 1/4 lemon (sans peel), one mango (also peeled), and one pear.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVTVdrJT2s4nylnbksnt5BJu_Vcm5zW36dBZ8_9LnECxEubWRBk0v4nNWX9HK04thGe5fN3uvRAkpUsuIUsEEaRjnqqw5n5VIBam8RCA4FJ7-qBUWTbvrMD20IyUovWrJUIA97WqBz70/s1600/2011-02-20-green-juice.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVTVdrJT2s4nylnbksnt5BJu_Vcm5zW36dBZ8_9LnECxEubWRBk0v4nNWX9HK04thGe5fN3uvRAkpUsuIUsEEaRjnqqw5n5VIBam8RCA4FJ7-qBUWTbvrMD20IyUovWrJUIA97WqBz70/s320/2011-02-20-green-juice.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575977719895632066" border="0" /></a>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03106175502097580767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-24924528032869799682009-10-16T09:02:00.000-07:002009-10-16T09:05:42.947-07:00Wishing I was somewhere tropical...... this smoothie almost takes you there. :-)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJjRYPUn8_416QAZxWEcTmha-i6lFGuTj_vcx6AwMzteQ2jx3thLdzJYDzeNz7qsD0rkTrCzsw13_3RbzhMjBnTALWH_AzSlBWQZ0M-iVrIjnOZmJqyIKKWPJF1iX5zkNTvp4nmA9ge070/s1600-h/smoothie.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJjRYPUn8_416QAZxWEcTmha-i6lFGuTj_vcx6AwMzteQ2jx3thLdzJYDzeNz7qsD0rkTrCzsw13_3RbzhMjBnTALWH_AzSlBWQZ0M-iVrIjnOZmJqyIKKWPJF1iX5zkNTvp4nmA9ge070/s320/smoothie.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393229541618065202" border="0" /></a><blockquote><br />1/2 cup pineapple juice<br />1/2 cup coconut water<br />1 heaping cup pineapple chunks, fresh or canned<br />1 heaping cup frozen mango chunks<br />1 banana, fresh or frozen<br />flax seeds, flax oil, or chia seeds, optional<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth. I've still been drinking my green smoothies (last weekend I even shared some with family members who had never tried them before - that was fun!), but life has been beyond crazy and I just haven't had time to get too creative with my recipes. I did throw something together this morning that turned out pretty tasty though, so I thought I'd share, even though I didn't measure ingredients. Be warned, the combination of red fruits with fresh leafy greens produces a brownish color that is not the most visually pleasing thing, but the taste is great.<br /><br />a handful or two of frozen strawberries<br />a handful or two of frozen cherries<br />2 medjool dates<br />1 tablespoon chia seeds, optional<br />lots of kale<br />enough non-dairy milk to make it blend (I used vanilla rice milk and vanilla soy milk)<br /><br />Enjoy!Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-5905575088841674782009-04-27T12:55:00.000-07:002009-04-27T12:57:00.833-07:00Yum!<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Delicious Tropical Juice</span><br /><br />watermelon chunks, chilled<br />mango chunks, frozen<br />papaya nectar, chilled<br />a bit of agave nectar, optional<br /><br />Blend and enjoy!</blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-40090591280484589692009-04-17T14:22:00.000-07:002009-04-17T14:22:00.691-07:00Tropical ParadiseThis is another one from <a href="http://mcfarlanddesigns.blogspot.com">my other blog</a>, again without absolute measurements... sorry.<br /><br /><span style="display: block;" id="formatbar_Buttons"><span class="on" style="display: block;" id="formatbar_Add_Image" title="Add Image" onmouseover="ButtonHoverOn(this);" onmouseout="ButtonHoverOff(this);" onmouseup="addImage();" onmousedown="CheckFormatting(event);;ButtonMouseDown(this);"><img src="http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif" alt="Add Image" class="gl_photo" border="0" /></span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9pRLaAX1PmhI1p4RpHDZY9w0naL6rWOAMRHGC03mY7VXnothi9DVEvqtEQCKaISCqAICMsxyngW237V8hL2uouDNfUe04Y6i7aOP3ooXME6GaivNLIMc6384lVIhJ7609YA5M8FeJ8qfG/s1600-h/tropical.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9pRLaAX1PmhI1p4RpHDZY9w0naL6rWOAMRHGC03mY7VXnothi9DVEvqtEQCKaISCqAICMsxyngW237V8hL2uouDNfUe04Y6i7aOP3ooXME6GaivNLIMc6384lVIhJ7609YA5M8FeJ8qfG/s320/tropical.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325032304269654242" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tropical Smoothie</span><br /><br />frozen strawberries<br />frozen banana chunks<br />pineapple chunks (from a can)<br />frozen mango chunks<br />orange juice<br />a splash of flax oil<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.</blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-48181020734804843892009-04-15T14:19:00.000-07:002009-04-15T14:22:33.616-07:00Pomegranate Smoothie(originally posted on my <a href="http://mcfarlanddesigns.blogspot.com/">McFarland Designs</a> blog)<br /><br />I don't have exact measurements for this one - more of just a general guideline. :-)<br /><blockquote><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK7QvAzS-0FA8ADjpzxFDESy0JXW0F4o-CgnFFPhJpALdMAG3ENzq3_f9dz5Uw1vSpOilP2omDLzihh6zdZ14wdH5vQGAseHMABGgwvDDU1cWrfvFeLcAtXmZXbrVuCuLaVd84KW594D8Z/s1600-h/pomsmoothie.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK7QvAzS-0FA8ADjpzxFDESy0JXW0F4o-CgnFFPhJpALdMAG3ENzq3_f9dz5Uw1vSpOilP2omDLzihh6zdZ14wdH5vQGAseHMABGgwvDDU1cWrfvFeLcAtXmZXbrVuCuLaVd84KW594D8Z/s320/pomsmoothie.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325031534522420626" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />Pomegranate Smoothie</span><br /><br />frozen banana chunks<br />frozen strawberries<br />frozen mango<br />pomegranate juice, frozen in ice cube trays<br />ground flax seed (1 tablespoon per person)<br />apple juice<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.</blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-61692731260620253932009-04-05T12:28:00.000-07:002009-04-05T12:34:30.906-07:00RepetitionSorry I haven't posted much lately; I've been drinking pretty much the same smoothie over and over lately and here's why - I learned a few months ago that I'm mildly iron deficient. The doctor recommended a supplement, which I attempted to remember to take for a while, but I prefer to get my nutrients from whole foods whenever possible, and I recently read that combining spinach (a good source of iron) with vitamin C helps to increase your body's absorption of the iron. So I've been dedicating myself to drinking lots of shakes with spinach and oranges. Here's a current favorite -<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhxOboUmM_GBBGRe7Q37-xVzvrKil8lgifqPF0YV5nMVxvowUZScETlK_sp36lJjE-WWSt2wgnT4dKONBOnb-ywY3t6CfcMCFm4z-YJgf_NrA6uS2Rahh9bsUCTrqLPKwAXBHJ_LLGATq_/s1600-h/2009-03-22-greensmoothie2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhxOboUmM_GBBGRe7Q37-xVzvrKil8lgifqPF0YV5nMVxvowUZScETlK_sp36lJjE-WWSt2wgnT4dKONBOnb-ywY3t6CfcMCFm4z-YJgf_NrA6uS2Rahh9bsUCTrqLPKwAXBHJ_LLGATq_/s320/2009-03-22-greensmoothie2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321292597583078610" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Iron-Rich Green Smoothie</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">makes one large or two smaller servings</span><br /><br />1 cup pineapple juice<br />2 oranges, peeled<br />half a bunch of spinach (or more)<br />2 medjool dates, optional<br />1 tablespoon chia seeds, optional<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.<br /></blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-9755890481390938532009-04-02T07:42:00.000-07:002009-12-26T07:50:02.186-08:00PopsiclesLast night I made fruit popsicles for my son. I knew I'd have to try it one day, but it was hard for me to imagine that it would taste good. Well, today I finally brought myself to look that bunch of parsley in the fridge squarely in the eye and take up the challenge. And I'm glad to report that the resulting smoothie is really quite good!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfea3Wuz7XY9YxJruWcVhRJ9nhyLh3yORCDuAvxpVBatdY3xUQlV-PnUa4q9wny-rL7zUTin7inWNKZs3qY7oeKPcunTlQLDmgvymWZm2bKaw1dmTSJoFASzuxqpfNdYnbFNL7j73c-GI/s1600-h/2009-03-19.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfea3Wuz7XY9YxJruWcVhRJ9nhyLh3yORCDuAvxpVBatdY3xUQlV-PnUa4q9wny-rL7zUTin7inWNKZs3qY7oeKPcunTlQLDmgvymWZm2bKaw1dmTSJoFASzuxqpfNdYnbFNL7j73c-GI/s320/2009-03-19.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314953705373191794" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Parsley's-Not-So-Gross-After-All Smoothie</span><br /><br />1/2 cup non-dairy milk (I used vanilla almond milk)<br />2 handfulls frozen strawberries<br />1 large or 2 small bananas<br />3 dates, pitted<br />1/2 - 1 bunch parsley (I used flat-leaf)<br />1/4 cup walnuts, optional<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.</blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-2795026610368215582009-03-18T17:41:00.000-07:002009-03-18T17:41:00.878-07:00Don't Judge a Book by its CoverGranted, this smoothie looks a bit like a science project gone terribly awry, but trust me, it's tasty!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijaVSiA3j2aEOW7vI6iOgBo0zvYCAI8I7jL1VWjU4qe4JesbvCdyV32BHS0U2zE1xueWVzE13IXxuZT7LW_t1YJ4DuvhDAz3TG6nzcMFifP09eQpj2UNG2soRgQAC5wyYTJpIPfsfHsTyh/s1600-h/2009-03-15-green.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijaVSiA3j2aEOW7vI6iOgBo0zvYCAI8I7jL1VWjU4qe4JesbvCdyV32BHS0U2zE1xueWVzE13IXxuZT7LW_t1YJ4DuvhDAz3TG6nzcMFifP09eQpj2UNG2soRgQAC5wyYTJpIPfsfHsTyh/s320/2009-03-15-green.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313579739770370178" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sludgy Green Smoothie</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">makes two medium-large smoothies</span><br /><br />1 cup orange juice<br />1 orange<br />handful or two of frozen strawberries<br />handful or two of frozen mango chunks<br />2 ice cubes<br />2 handfuls of greens (I used kale)<br /><br />Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.</blockquote>Tamarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751512090298090771noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-238021050662487928.post-89666993865878265442009-03-17T09:35:00.000-07:002009-03-17T09:35:00.690-07:00Apple, Banana and Sweet Potato SmoothieThis one is straight from the <a href="http://www.vita-mix.com/">Vita-Mix</a> website. It's one of my favorites.<br /><br />In addition to the USDA recommendation of three cups of dark green leafy vegetables per week that I mentioned <a href="http://planetsmoothie.blogspot.com/2009/03/green-smoothies-101.html">earlier</a>, they also recommend a minimum of two servings of orange vegetables per week. This smoothie is a delicious way to get some of those tasty orange veggies. Enjoy!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjufi2EFjW_0ENUzRPhEBCDLO8JDWDmIisRt7MNw7C257Kxdtn9PDLlqMmBSJaeHgvG7tDBly-5Q2JCP11vuk8V9F7ZMRGobXu0WjhT7DD_x361s62gh1yNHTOSA-dB04LCt5wM42GkQnPZ/s1600-h/2009-03-15.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjufi2EFjW_0ENUzRPhEBCDLO8JDWDmIisRt7MNw7C257Kxdtn9PDLlqMmBSJaeHgvG7tDBly-5Q2JCP11vuk8V9F7ZMRGobXu0WjhT7DD_x361s62gh1yNHTOSA-dB04LCt5wM42GkQnPZ/s320/2009-03-15.jpg" alt="sweet potato smoothie" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313456138597525762" border="0" /></a><br /><table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td><p><table class="printtime-table" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr class="printtime-row"><td class="printtime-cell"><span class="printtime-label">Yield: </span><span class="printtime-value">4 cups (960 mL)</span></td></tr></tbody></table></p> </td> <td> <p> <br /><br /> <photo_url><br /> </photo_url></p> </td> </tr> </tbody></table><table class="ingredientmethod-table" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1 (114 g) medium sweet potato, cooked, unpeeled and cooled</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1/2 cup (120 mL) non-dairy milk</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1 (120 g) small banana</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1/2 (70 g) golden delicious apple, cut in half</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1/8 teaspoon nutmeg</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1 tablespoon honey or other sweetener, to taste</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract</td></tr> <tr class="printingredient-row"><td class="printingredient-cell">2 cups (480 mL) ice cubes</td></tr> <tr class="printblankingredientmethod-row"><td class="printblankingredientmethod-cell"><br /></td></tr> <tr class="printmethod-row"><td class="printmethod-cell">Place all ingredients in Vita-Mix container in order listed.
